Brisbane Hypnosis Clinic : pain management and pain relief
Hypnosis for pain control
Hypnosis in one form or another has been around for all of human history, but it is only recently that research giving evidence to support its biological and clinically powerful effects has been conducted. On the basis of such research hypnosis is used in clinical settings around the world to help manage pain and assist in childbirth and much more.
Brisbane Hypnosis Clinic : hypnotherapy for pain control and relief from chronic pain
Anyone who lives with chronic pain knows that what they are feeling is very real and that it not only has an impact on their physical wellbeing, but also their mental health and quality of life. Research has shown that pain is not simply a physiological phenomenon, the way humans interpret and experience pain has both physical and psychological components. How we perceive and think about physiological pain makes up a significant part of how we actually experience pain.
Pain as a construct
Research shows that the way we interpret pain is actually a construct of three things:
- past remembered pain
- present pain and;
- pain anticipated in the future.
Two of these three components of the pain construct are completely mind-based and respond very well to hypnotherapy as a treatment. At the very least, working with hypnosis and changing our perception of past remembered pain and anticipated pain will greatly reduce the way we experience sensations of pain in the present, in this way hypnotherapy can reduce, alleviate and even change how we experience pain. Florence Nightingale wrote in 1859 that the most important thing a nurse could do was to “help the sick vary their thoughts”, a truth which still holds true today.
Hypnotherapy is a powerful way to learn how to “vary our thoughts”, or in other words thing and experience the sensations of pain in different and much more constructive and comfortable ways.
Brisbane Hypnosis Clinic : how hypnosis helps in pain control
Using hypnotherapy it is possible not only to deal with past remembered pain and future anticipated pain, we can also learn to change the perception or the feeling and intensity of the pain we presently experience. It has been said that “there is no pain until it reaches the brain”and while this is an oversimplification the basic concept is true and hypnosis is used to alter how we experience pain both physiologically and psychologically.
The successful use of hypnosis in pain control is well researched and hypnosis has been proved effective in treating all kinds of pain and discomfort.
“There is now sufficient scientific evidence to consider hypnosis an effective and specific treatment for pain, which shows superiority to pills and placebo.” American Psychological Association
“Hypnosis lowers the cost of treatment in medical settings.” Montgomery
“No other psychological technique is as efficacious in creating comfort out of discomfort, with none of the adverse side effects associated with medical treatments if comparable efficacy.” Barber (1986:151)
